The number of people killed in the violence in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State has increased to 18. This follows new attacks, even with ongoing peace efforts from security agencies and local officials.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that the crisis began from a long-standing land dispute between two communities in Godoro village, which led to two deaths.

Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson in Niger State, provided an update on the situation. He said the first incident took place on 29 June around 11:30 p.m. in Godoro village, Katako District. Here, suspected armed men shot and killed 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa.

Mr Abiodun mentioned that this killing led to a retaliation by local vigilante members, known as Yan Sakai. They blocked a road and allegedly killed 28-year-old Bashir Mazi. “The attack was allegedly linked to a lingering land dispute between two tribes in the area,” the police spokesperson said.

The violence worsened on 1 July at about 10 p.m. when police received reports that 15 people were burned to death. This happened after attackers reportedly set a two-bedroom house on fire at Angwan-Baago, near Godoro village. Another person was also killed in a different spot during the attacks, raising the death toll in the conflict to 18.

Mr Abiodun said investigations are ongoing to find and arrest those responsible for the attacks. He also mentioned that a reconciliation committee led by Rafi Local Government Council officials is working with security agencies and community leaders. They aim to address the root causes of the conflict.

The police spokesperson added that joint police and military patrol teams have been sent to the affected areas. Their goal is to restore peace and stop further violence.

Authorities are hopeful that the combined security efforts and ongoing reconciliation will bring lasting peace to the region.
