Passengers flying with Air Peace might face delays or cancellations. This follows a serious incident where one of the airline's Airbus A320 planes was damaged while on the ground at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 1 in Lagos.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Air Peace pointed fingers at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO). They said a baggage conveyor belt vehicle crashed into the aircraft's engine right after passengers got off Flight P47427 from Kano.
Air Peace noted that the damage made the aircraft “totally unserviceable.” Because of this, they have to change their flight schedule since this aircraft was meant to operate several flights in the coming days.
“This unfortunate incident has significantly impacted our operations, as the aircraft was rostered to operate multiple flights within our network over the coming days. Consequently, several scheduled services will experience delays, while some may regrettably be cancelled as we work to mitigate the disruption through fleet adjustments,” the airline explained.
Air Peace also expressed regret to passengers whose travel plans may be affected. They said their operational and customer service teams are doing their best to reduce the disruption by offering alternative travel arrangements and necessary support.
The airline added that they are collaborating with the ground handling company and aviation authorities. They want to find out what happened and make sure it does not happen again.
“At Air Peace, the safety of our passengers, crew and equipment remains our highest priority. We are working closely with the relevant ground handling company and aviation authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and prevent a recurrence,” the statement said.
Ground handling companies are essential for airlines. They take care of baggage handling and operate special equipment around aircraft. Problems with ground support equipment can lead to expensive repairs, operational issues, and changes in flight schedules, especially when aircraft engines are involved.
This incident is not the first for Air Peace. Just a few months ago, in December 2025, another Air Peace aircraft was damaged by ground handling equipment at the same Lagos airport. This has raised fresh concerns about safety practices during ground operations.
As of now, NAHCO had not replied to requests for comments about the situation.
