The Anambra State House of Assembly has asked important government officials to come and discuss ways to manage and prevent flooding in the state.
This request came after a meeting on Tuesday in Awka. Lawmakers shared their worries about the serious dangers and harmful effects of flooding in various areas of the state.
The House decided to invite the Commissioner for Environment, Clem Aguiyi, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Okey Ezeobi. They are expected to appear before the Assembly on June 2.
During the meeting, the Minority Leader and Member representing Nnewi South Constituency 2, Johnbosco Akaegbobi, spoke about how flooding has harmed people's lives and property.
Mr Akaegbobi pointed out that many residents are losing their property because of blocked drainages and poor environmental practices in the state.
He mentioned recent videos on social media showing a Toyota Venza being swept away by floodwaters. He said these incidents show just how serious the flooding problem is in Anambra.
Other lawmakers, including the Majority Leader Ikenna Ofodeme from Ekwusigo constituency, Tony Muobike from Aguata Constituency 2, Obi Nweke from Anambra East Constituency, and Emma Nwafor from Orumba South Constituency, added their voices. They said flooding continues to create serious problems in the state.
They talked about how flooding has damaged homes, farmlands, roads, and other valuable properties for many people.
Mr Akaegbobi pointed out that most damage happens in busy cities like Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka, where people often dump refuse in ways that block drainage systems.
The lawmakers also mentioned a sad case where a tricycle rider was found dead in Onitsha after a flood.
They called for better drainage systems, public awareness on proper waste disposal, and the building of catchment points around homes.
They said it is the government's job to protect the lives and property of its people.
The Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, thanked the person who raised the motion. He said the resolution would help tackle the flooding issues in the state.
Mr Udeze reminded everyone that it is the lawmakers' duty to represent the people of Anambra.
