Anambra court sends three suspects to jail for incest and defilement

A gender magistrate court in Awka, Anambra State, has sent three suspects to jail. They were brought before the court by the state police command for different charges of incest, defilement, and rape. This happened after police finished their investigations.

One of the suspects is Ikenna Mojekwu. He is accused of having illegal sexual relations with his 14-year-old daughter in Aguluzoigbo, Anaocha Local Government Area.

This information came from a statement released on Thursday by Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesman for the state police command. Ikenga mentioned that the suspects were taken to court on Wednesday after police finished their investigations.

Another suspect, Chibuike Ikemelu, is said to have had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl. This incident led to her pregnancy in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The third suspect is 16-year-old Chukwuma Emenike. He faces accusations of defiling an eight-year-old girl in Umuoji, Idemili North.

Ikenga said their arraignment shows that the police are committed to protecting vulnerable people and making sure justice is served for victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

The statement said, “The suspects were arraigned on separate charges bordering on alleged incest, defilement, and rape following the conclusion of police investigations.

“Among those arraigned is Ikenna Mojekwu, who is facing charges of alleged incest for reportedly engaging in unlawful sexual acts with his 14-year-old daughter in Aguluzoigbo.

“Also arraigned was Chibuike Ikemelu, who is alleged to have had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl, resulting in pregnancy in Abatete. The third suspect, Chukwuma Emenike, aged 16 years old, was arraigned on allegations of defiling an eight-year-old girl in Umuoji.

“The suspects were arraigned after investigations by the police and were sent to jail according to the orders of the court. The cases have been put on hold for further hearing.

Ikenga also emphasized the police's determination to investigate and prosecute all cases of sexual and gender-based violence. He encouraged victims and the public to report such crimes immediately.

He assured that every report will be treated seriously, while also protecting the rights of victims and ensuring the right processes are followed.
