The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Senator David Mark, has raised concerns about using state institutions to influence the 2027 general elections. He insists that the credibility of the polls must be non-negotiable.
Mark also highlighted the dangers of intimidation, violence, and other forms of election malpractice. He stated that the ADC expects the upcoming elections to be transparent, inclusive, peaceful, and free from any interference.
The former Senate President spoke on Wednesday in Abuja when he met a delegation from the International Republican Institute, which is currently in Nigeria to assess preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to Mark, the integrity of the electoral process will be crucial in ensuring that Nigerians trust the outcome of the 2027 elections. He said, "For us in the ADC, the credibility of the 2027 elections must be non-negotiable. We expect the electoral process to be transparent, inclusive, peaceful and free from manipulation, intimidation and the abuse of state institutions."
He expressed worry over the ongoing abuse of the electoral process by those in power and other groups. Mark warned that such actions could weaken democratic governance and diminish public trust in elections.
Mark pointed out the violence and intimidation seen during the recent Osun State governorship election. He said this should serve as a warning as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
He noted that reports claimed at least 30 people lost their lives during the election, calling this situation unacceptable and worthy of condemnation. He added, "Elections should not be treated as war or a do-or-die affair. They should be a democratic process through which citizens freely choose their leaders and advance their aspirations for development and a better quality of life."
The ADC chairman emphasized that his party is dedicated to ensuring a secure electoral process. He said voters should be able to cast their votes without fear or intimidation.
He insisted that every vote must count and that the mandates given by the people should be honored. His remarks come as political parties and other groups ramp up preparations for the 2027 general elections. Concerns about electoral violence, the neutrality of state institutions, and the credibility of the electoral process are already hot topics in discussions.
Earlier, the IRI delegation mentioned that their visit aims to evaluate the country’s readiness and meet with key stakeholders about issues that could impact the election process.
Jenai Cox, the African Regional Director of IRI, explained that the organization is conducting a pre-election assessment mission to review preparations for the 2027 polls. He noted that IRI has observed Nigerian elections since 1999 and monitored the recent Osun State governorship election. Another team also visited Ekiti State to gather information.
Cox added that the current mission would wrap up at the end of the week. Afterward, the organization will make recommendations based on discussions with political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.
