The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved road construction and repair projects worth about N438 billion across Nigeria.

The approvals also include trailer parks and highways under public-private partnerships.

Bello Goronyo, the Minister of State for Works, shared this information with State House reporters after Wednesday’s FEC meeting.

The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, led by President Bola Tinubu.

Goronyo said the Council reviewed around 15 memoranda from different ministries. Seven of these came from the Ministry of Works.

He mentioned that the Ministry’s proposals included major road construction, repair projects, and trailer park concessions.

FEC approved the reconstruction of the Ado-Ekiti-Iyin-Aramoko-Itawure-Osun border road in Ekiti.

The project was given to Messrs CBC Global Civil and Building Construction Nigeria Ltd. for N159.83 billion.

The Council also approved changes for the rehabilitation of the Abeokuta-Iboro-Ilaro Road in Ogun.

Goronyo stated that the change involved switching the pavement design from rigid concrete to asphalt, costing N54.12 billion.

FEC also approved the reconstruction of the 15-kilometre Port Harcourt-Eleme Junction-Onne Port Junction section of the East-West Road.

The project in Rivers was awarded to RCC Nigeria Ltd. for N74.51 billion, with a completion period of nine months.

The Council further approved the Phase II rehabilitation of the Ado-Ekiti-Afe Babalola University Road in Ekiti.

This road is part of the Ado-Ijan-Iluomobi-Imesi-Ondo border route and will cost N54.52 billion.

Another approval covers the construction of the Ilara-Iselu Road, Phases II-V, in Ogun.

The project was awarded to JRB Construction Company Ltd. for N94.24 billion, expected to be finished within 24 months.

Goronyo said these projects are part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and boost economic activities across the country.

"Roads enable growth and boost the economy of any nation," he stated.

He added that these projects would “go a long way in alleviating the sufferance of our people.”

According to him, fixing key road corridors would improve connectivity and help with the movement of people and goods.

He also mentioned that better connectivity would enhance economic activities in the affected areas.

On the topic of trailer parks, Goronyo said FEC approved public-private partnership concessions to move heavy-duty vehicles off highways.

"The essence of these trailer parks is to ensure that we move those trailers from our highways," he noted.

He said these parks would provide truck drivers with safe and developed places to park their vehicles.

Goronyo explained that private partners would design, finance, build, operate, and maintain the facilities.

He emphasized that the federal government would not fund the concessioned trailer park projects.

Among the approvals was the development of the 7.9-kilometre Dikko-Maje section of the Suleja-Minna Road in Niger.

Graciatech Engineering Nigeria Ltd. will handle this project at N56.75 billion under a 40-year concession.

The Council also approved the operation and maintenance of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway by LIB Concession Group.

This project costs N96.43 billion and has a 25-year concession period.

FEC further approved the development of a new trailer park at Aro-Ngwa in Abia.

Greg Jane International Ltd. will manage this project at N19.70 billion under a 50-year concession.

Goronyo said these approvals show the government’s commitment to involving private-sector capital and expertise.

He mentioned that such partnerships would help develop, operate, and maintain important national infrastructure.

The minister praised President Tinubu for focusing on road infrastructure and advancing projects across the country.

He indicated that the ongoing projects show the administration’s dedication to improving transportation and supporting economic development.

Goronyo added that the approved projects would help reduce gaps in infrastructure and enhance road safety.

He said they would also create better conditions for transport, trade, and other business activities across the nation.
