Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced that over 30,000 people living with HIV in Ogun are getting free antiretroviral therapy, counselling, and support services at health facilities in the state.

Governor Abiodun shared this information on Thursday in Abeokuta while launching the Pharma-Grade Warehouse of the Ogun State Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency.

He stated that his government has made important strides in healthcare by improving the state's health system for better service delivery. He encouraged residents to use available healthcare services by visiting hospitals for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

The governor mentioned that the state government is working to boost HIV prevention programs, increase testing services, and take steps to cut down new infections.

"Today, more than 30,000 residents of Ogun State living with HIV are receiving free antiretroviral therapy, counselling, and support services.

"We continue to strengthen prevention programs, expand testing services, and reduce new infections," he said.

Governor Abiodun praised the Global Fund for helping expand access to HIV treatment in Nigeria. He noted the Fund’s support for tuberculosis diagnosis, malaria prevention, and the supply of life-saving medicines and health commodities.

He pointed out that the Fund’s support has especially helped women, children, adolescents, vulnerable groups, and those in underserved areas.

Describing the new warehouse as a smart investment, the governor said it would improve the storage, management, and distribution of essential medicines and health supplies in the state.

"The facility will strengthen supply chain efficiency, reduce stock-outs, and ensure that medicines and test kits reach healthcare facilities and patients across the 20 local government areas on time," he stated.

Mr Abiodun recognized that HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria are serious public health challenges in the state. He assured that his government, along with partners, is making good progress through ongoing efforts to lessen their impact.

Reiterating his administration’s goal to stop mother-to-child transmission of HIV, the governor said efforts against tuberculosis have also been stepped up through community outreach, contact tracing, and mapping of hotspots.

"Access to diagnostic services, including screening, X-rays, and lab tests, has been improved, while treatment remains free and available. Our message is clear: tuberculosis is preventable, detectable, and curable," he added.

The governor also thanked the Federal Government for its work in strengthening the health sector and improving access to quality healthcare. He said Ogun State will keep aligning with national goals to achieve measurable health outcomes for its people.

Earlier, the Health Commissioner, Dr Tomi Coker, said the facility was built to enhance the quality of healthcare services in the state. She praised Governor Abiodun for investing in a High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) machine for testing the quality of drugs supplied to health facilities. She also revealed plans to use technology to detect low stock levels in medical facilities across Ogun.

In his comments, the Executive Director of the Global Fund, Peter Sands, called the new facility a vital investment for improving healthcare delivery and ensuring timely availability of medicines, vaccines, and diagnostic supplies.

Mr Sands mentioned that Ogun State’s warehouse is the largest and best-equipped of the 22 warehouses built across the country. He praised the state’s leadership in health and promised the Global Fund’s ongoing support for better health outcomes and a stronger healthcare system.

He stressed that the facility was funded jointly by the Global Fund and Ogun State Government. He said it shows the administration’s commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of the people and expressed readiness to maintain the partnership with the state.
