On June 12, 2026, to mark Democracy Day, 97 inmates at the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre were granted clemency. This was done under the Mercy Prerogative by Governor Uba Sani. The state government said this action is part of their plan to combine justice with rehabilitation and reintegration.
For many inmates, that day started like any other. They faced the usual routine and restrictions within the prison walls. But by afternoon, an official announcement changed everything. What is usually a national holiday turned into a moment of hope for many.
Governor Sani approved the release of 97 inmates as part of the Democracy Day celebrations. He said it was important to show compassion to those whose actions were often driven by tough economic conditions. The government believes this decision shows a new kind of justice that focuses on correcting behaviour and helping people reintegrate into society.
He encouraged those released to take this chance to rebuild their lives, learn new skills, and give back to their communities. The governor also promised that his administration would continue to support rehabilitation programs. These programs aim to reduce repeat offenses and help former inmates adjust back into society.
The release was done with help from various justice sector partners. These included the judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Legal Aid Council, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups, and the state Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
Officials involved in the process said working together was key to reviewing cases and ensuring only the right inmates were released. They wanted to make sure the clemency process was fair and just.
Besides releasing inmates, the governor also shared plans to improve conditions in the state’s correctional facilities. This includes sending medical supplies to the custodial centre and providing a new vehicle to help with logistics.
He mentioned that more support would be given as needs are spotted in the correctional facilities. For the 97 inmates released, Democracy Day 2026 will be remembered not just as a day of national pride, but as a second chance to leave prison and start a new life.
