The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pushed the deadline for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks. This extension allows more Nigerians to register as voters.

INEC made this announcement in a statement on Friday in Abuja. The statement was from Mohammed Haruna, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

Mr Haruna said they made this decision after reviewing the ongoing exercise. They also considered feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.

He noted that the CVR started on 18 August 2025. It was originally set to end on 10 July 2026.

"To give more opportunity for eligible citizens who have not registered, we have extended the exercise to Sunday, July 26," Mr Haruna said.

He emphasized that this extension shows INEC's dedication to making sure every eligible Nigerian has a fair chance to join the National Register of Voters.

In addition, Mr Haruna announced a new self-service online registration for first-time voters. This move aims to make it easier for people to register.

He mentioned that this online registration would start on Wednesday, 8 July, through INEC's CVR portal.

According to him, the portal will guide users step-by-step to finish the registration process using their phones or computers.

"The self-service option will allow eligible citizens to begin and complete their voter registration, including biometric capture, on their own devices," he explained.

Mr Haruna added that applicants would not need to go to INEC offices anymore to register. This new system uses technology to make the process easier.

He also explained that the platform includes strong identity checks, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks. These features help protect the reliability and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

The national commissioner encouraged all eligible Nigerians who have not registered to take advantage of the extra time and use the new online registration option.

He reaffirmed INEC's promise to maintain a trustworthy, inclusive, and accessible voter registration process through technology that boosts citizens' involvement in Nigeria's elections.
