The Kano State government has stopped the use of intravenous (IV) fluids and blood transfusions in patent medicine stores across the state.

Khadijah Hussein-Sa’id, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), shared this news during a workshop for owners and medical directors of private health facilities in Kano.

Ms Hussein-Sa’id explained that patent medicine stores are not clinical places. They are not allowed to carry out invasive medical procedures, give IV fluids, or perform blood transfusions.

She added that this decision aims to protect residents from unsafe medical practices and improve the regulation of private health facilities in the state.

“Any patent medicine store or unauthorized facility found giving IV fluids or doing blood transfusions will face immediate closure and other penalties according to relevant laws and regulations,” she said.

The acting executive secretary said that blood transfusions and IV fluid treatments should only be done in accredited health facilities under the care of qualified medical professionals.

She also mentioned that this action aligns with the state government’s goal of protecting the health and lives of residents.

Ms Hussein-Sa’id urged the public to be alert and report any patent medicine stores or unauthorized facilities that are breaking the rules.

She said complaints can be made directly to the PHIMA office at Magaji Rumfa, along with proof like photographs, receipts, or other evidence of the services offered.

She assured that PHIMA will keep improving the regulation of private health institutions and take strong action against unsafe and unhygienic medical practices.

She encouraged operators of private health facilities to follow the new rules and meet the approved standards to improve healthcare in the state.
