The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, says Nigeria is working on direct cargo flights from China to the South-east through Enugu. They plan to start these flights before the year ends.
Keyamo spoke on Thursday during the launch of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft for United Nigeria Airlines.
"Just two days ago, the Enugu governor and I were negotiating the first direct cargo flight from Guangzhou, China, straight to Enugu. We are aiming for December for the first flight. This will help our Southeast merchants and traders in China to group their goods into single cargo accounts twice a week, flying directly into Enugu for easy delivery to places like Onitsha and Aba," he said.
He pointed out that this plan will boost trade logistics and improve business activities in the region.
Keyamo mentioned that the Enugu International Airport is being set up as a cargo hub for the South-east under a new plan that includes private sector involvement.
"One of our pride points in the South is the Enugu International Airport. The Enugu governor spoke to the President, saying the airport was not reaching its full economic potential under the usual rules. He asked for private investors to manage it. The President agreed," Keyamo explained.
"As I speak now, Enugu airport is fully owned and managed by private interests under the guidance of the state government. The clear goal is to turn it into a dedicated cargo hub for the entire South-east," he added.
