The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Tijani, is working to prevent violence among transport union members after the killing of Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. He urged everyone to avoid revenge and let the police finish their investigation.
Tijani shared this message during a meeting with leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria. He promised that those who killed Ajiboye would be caught.
According to PUNCH Metro, Ajiboye was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Sunday. This has raised worries about possible retaliation among transport union members in Lagos.
While speaking to the union leaders, the police commissioner said the police have started a detailed investigation into the incident. Officers have also been sent to key areas in Lagos to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Tijani assured everyone that the results of the investigation would be shared with the public once it is complete. He asked the leaders of the NURTW and RTEAN to encourage their members to stay calm and avoid actions that could disturb public peace.
He said, "The command has commenced a thorough investigation into the incident. We appeal to all parties to remain calm and allow the police to carry out their investigation without interference.
"We are committed to conducting a diligent, professional and unbiased investigation. Anyone found breaching the peace will be dealt with in accordance with the law."
The commissioner also called on the public to provide any useful information that could help the police catch those responsible for the killing.
In response, Mustapha Adekunle, the Lagos State Chairman of the NURTW, who is also known as Sego, praised the police for keeping peace since the incident occurred. He mentioned that the union has held several meetings to stress the importance of peace among its members and assured the commissioner that anyone trying to create trouble would be turned over to the police.
"We have continued to maintain peace since the incident. We will not tolerate any member who disobeys the directive to remain calm," he stated.
The chairman of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria in Lagos also assured the police of their support in the investigation. He promised that their members would not take part in any actions that could lead to unrest.
He expressed confidence that those responsible for the crime would be punished and reaffirmed the association's commitment to keeping peace in the state.
The meeting also suggested that public announcements be made to discourage residents and transport union members from taking any actions that might lead to violence while the investigation is ongoing.
