The office of Clement Jimbo, the lawmaker for Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency, has warned people about fake Facebook accounts set up in his name. They advised the public not to interact with these fraudsters.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Mr Jimbo’s office said he only has one official Facebook account. He does not use it for money transactions or to promise jobs or empowerment opportunities.
This warning came after they noticed several fake accounts pretending to be the federal lawmaker.
A look at Mr Jimbo’s Facebook page by PREMIUM TIMES showed that he shared a screenshot of four different accounts using his name. Each of these accounts was marked with a bold red “X”, showing they are not real.
He wrote alongside the screenshot: “Beware and be warned! Impersonation is a serious crime, the law will get you soon. Start digging the ground to enter.”
Warning to the public
The lawmaker’s office advised the public not to talk to, transact with, or send money to anyone using social media accounts in his name.
“Any person who chooses to deal with these fraudulent accounts does so entirely at their own risk.”
They urged everyone to ignore messages from the fake accounts. People should also report and block these accounts.
The office warned those behind the fake accounts to shut them down immediately or face legal action.
“This act of impersonation is criminal, misleading, and wholly unacceptable. We therefore urge everyone to remain vigilant, disregard any messages from such fake accounts, and promptly report and block them,” the statement added.
