A lawyer based in Abuja, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has written to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu. He is asking for quick action to stop the rising violence in Osun State before the governorship election on August 15.
In his petition submitted on Thursday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Mr Olajengbesi expressed worry over ongoing violence tied to politics. He requested that the police send a special team to help restore peace and protect the people in the state.
He said these killings put public safety at risk and could affect the fairness of the upcoming election. He pointed out that many communities are scared, as the violence has led to deaths, injuries, and damage to property.
As a legal practitioner and spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Mr Olajengbesi stressed the need for a thorough investigation. He called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the violence, no matter their political ties. He also asked for more police presence in areas known for trouble.
He added that there should be a review of security measures in the state. He wants all police units in Osun to enforce the law fairly during the election period.
"The purpose of this petition is to bring to your attention a disturbing pattern of election-related violence which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives, serious injuries to several citizens, destruction of property, and widespread fear," Mr Olajengbesi said.
He reminded everyone that the right to life is the most important right under the 1999 Constitution. He highlighted the police's duty to keep public order. He mentioned the killing of 14-year-old Ezekiel Olapade in Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area, as a sad example of the violence affecting many local areas.
The petition has attached documents that include names of victims, dates, locations, witness statements, photographs, videos, and other evidence.
Mr Olajengbesi expressed worry about the drop in public trust in the police. "Every incident that goes without a prompt, transparent, and effective response encourages impunity and undermines confidence in democratic institutions," he said.
He urged police leaders to take strong action. He said, "Elections should be decided by the freely expressed will of the people through the ballot and not by intimidation, violence, or bloodshed."
"I respectfully urge your office to treat this petition with the urgency it deserves. The preservation of lives, the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy, and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force require decisive and timely intervention."
