The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano Command, destroyed 12,234.946 kilograms of various illegal drugs on Monday.

Sadiq Maigatari, the command’s Media and Advocacy Officer, shared this information in a statement. A copy of the statement was sent to PUNCH Online.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano Command has destroyed 12,233.946 kilograms (about 12.234 tonnes) of different illicit drugs and psychotropic substances. These were intercepted and seized through ongoing intelligence-led operations across Kano State and at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport,” the statement said.

Commander CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal led the destruction. This exercise is a significant step in the Agency’s fight against drug abuse. It shows NDLEA’s commitment to stopping, investigating, and prosecuting those who deal in dangerous drugs.

The statement explained that the drugs were seized through targeted raids and consistent law enforcement across the state. The command has arrested over 904 suspects, including 869 men and 35 women, and seized 2.5 tonnes of various illegal drugs since January.

“From January 2026, the Kano Command has arrested over 904 suspects (869 male, 35 female) and seized more than 2.5 tonnes of different illegal drugs during this time. They have also secured over 54 convictions,” the statement noted.

Some offenders have received sentences of up to 15 years. This shows that arrests lead to prosecutions, and prosecutions lead to consequences, according to the statement.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf spoke about the public destruction of the drugs. He said this shows the state’s strong commitment to stopping criminal groups from harming communities.

The governor also said that law enforcement will go hand in hand with rehabilitation programs. He mentioned initiatives like visits to the Kiru Rehabilitation Centre, the Anti-Illicit Drugs and Phone Snatching Committee, and the deployment of marshals to hot spots. He also highlighted the Safe Corridor Project for helping youth reintegrate into society.

The governor pointed out that over 400 youths have been arrested, with many reintegrated back into society. He said that serious dealers will face prosecution and promised to continue sharing intelligence, improving rehabilitation efforts, and providing logistical support.
