The Ekiti State Police have caught four suspected thieves at a hideout in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.
The police spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, said the suspects were arrested during a raid based on intelligence in the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti on Sunday.
In a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Monday, Abutu said officers found many items that are likely from burglary and theft.
He said, “During the operation, four suspects were arrested. They are Abdurazak Suleiman, 39; John Okori, 27; Francis Okori, 32; and Kehinde Alabi, 30, all living in Omisanjana, Ado Ekiti.
“A search of the place led to the recovery of several items suspected to have been stolen from different shops. These include various perfumes, bathing soaps, alcoholic drinks, food items, body care products, cotton materials, clothes, a school bag, a 3kg gas cylinder, and a sledgehammer believed to have been used for breaking into shops.
“Initial investigations showed that the suspects lived together in the same apartment. Further intelligence from the scene linked them to a recent burglary at a shop in Ekute Quarters, Ado Ekiti, near the Water Works construction site, where some of the suspects were reportedly working as labourers.”
The police spokesperson said they are working to find the owner of the burgled shop and other possible victims to identify and recover their stolen items. An investigation has started to understand the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in burglary and other crimes.
Abutu said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo Falade, has confirmed the command’s dedication to intelligence-led policing to protect lives and property in the state.
He added that the commissioner encouraged residents to keep giving timely and reliable information, assuring them that all information will be handled with the highest confidentiality.
