Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the flooded Ogombo community in Eti-Osa Local Government Area on Wednesday. He wanted to see how the recent flooding affected the people and talk to those impacted.
The governor was with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, and other members of the Lagos State Executive Council.
Sanwo-Olu also checked out other places like Monastery Road, Sangotedo, Gbetu, Iwerekun, and more areas in the Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area.
Videos from the visit shared by Lagos Junction on X showed the governor and his team walking through knee-deep, muddy floodwaters near homes and local infrastructure.
The officials, many dressed in boots and casual clothes, moved carefully through the flooded streets. They looked at the conditions and spoke with residents and local leaders.
This visit comes as Lagos deals with seasonal flooding worsened by days of heavy rain. Many roads in the area were underwater, making it hard for residents to get around.
People had to use canoes to travel across the flooded parts of their community. The affected residents asked the Lagos State Government for quick and long-term flood control measures. They want to return to their homes, businesses, and daily lives.
The state government had earlier ordered emergency dredging and maintenance work on different drainage channels. This was to help improve water flow and lower future flood risks.
Last June, Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, said the heavy rainfall was an extreme weather event. It overwhelmed drainage systems in many areas of the state.
He mentioned that the downpours caused temporary floods in places like Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, and Mafoluku.
"The Lagos State Government on Tuesday asked residents to remain calm and understanding after the severe flash flooding in many areas of the state over the last two weeks. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 primary channels across the state," he said.
Wahab explained that the rainfall was an unusual weather event. It brought a lot of water in a short time, which overwhelmed drainage systems in some spots and caused temporary flooding in places like Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, Mafoluku, and more.
He pointed out that this flooding was not just a Lagos issue. Similar heavy rainfall also hit other African countries and parts of North America on the same day.
Earlier, during interventions in nearby areas like Ajiran and Agungi, authorities saw visible improvements in stormwater drainage after clearing blockages and restoring the natural flow of water.
