Killings of Nigerians in South Africa
When the Senate met again last Tuesday, a big topic was the recent attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong from Cross River South brought up a motion. He called on the federal government to ensure justice for the victims of these xenophobic attacks.
During the debate, several senators spoke up. They included Wasiu Eshinlokun from Lagos Central, Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North, and Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central. They expressed their sadness over the ongoing killings and the destruction of properties belonging to Nigerians in South Africa.
Senator Eshinlokun, who is part of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggested that the Senate think about nationalising MTN Group and DStv, which is owned by MultiChoice Group. He said that money made from these companies should be used to help Nigerians who lost property during the attacks. But Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President who led the session, turned down the suggestion. He said that the situation around the attacks needs a full investigation before Nigeria decides what to do next.
