Haruna Mamuda and Sadiq Umar have been found guilty by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Jikwoyi, Abuja. They impersonated officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to cheat people.

According to the official statement from the EFCC, Justice M. Zubairu convicted the two men on Thursday. They faced five charges related to impersonation, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful representation.

The charges claimed that the two, along with Salifu Olije Mustapha, who is also on trial in an FCT High Court in Kubwa, planned to falsely act as EFCC officers in March 2026. This act is against Section 96 of the Penal Code Act and is punishable under Section 132 of the same law.

One charge mentioned that Umar, who is also called Abubakar Hashimu Umar, pretended to be an EFCC officer. In that role, he cheated unsuspecting people.

Both men admitted guilt when the charges were read to them.

After their guilty pleas, the prosecution lawyer, R. U. Adagba, asked the court to convict them as per the law.

The lawyer for the first convict, Anamegbumam Innocent, asked for mercy. He told the court that his client showed remorse, is married with children, and cooperated with EFCC investigators.

Similarly, the lawyer for the second convict, Bemdo Asan, also pleaded for leniency. He pointed out that his client had no prior criminal record.

In response, Adagba urged the court to give a suitable sentence.

"My Lord, the first defendant is a former member of the Nigerian Army. His sentence will serve as a warning to society. I also want the court to keep in mind that they were brought in from the Department of State Services, where they face charges of terrorism financing and kidnapping," she stated.

Justice Zubairu then postponed the case until July 22, 2026, for sentencing and ordered that the two men remain in EFCC custody.
