Edo rugby board plans schools tourney, facility upgrade

The new executive committee of the Edo State Rugby Association has made moves to construct sitting stands and changing rooms at the rugby facility in the state as well as organise competitions among schools in the state.

These moves follow their inauguration by the Edo State Government as well as other sports associations in the state on Wednesday.

Edo State Rugby Association is now headed by Chukwuemeka Anthony as acting chairman and Nelson Eselekhomwen as vice chairman.

After their inaugural board meeting recently, the new eight-member board took a tour of the Rugby Association office as well as the major facilities within the state.

According to a statement issued by the secretary, Osakpamwan Obaraye there are discussions for an immediate temporary changing room and an office/store to be situated at the Adolor Rugby Grounds for the players’ comfort and privacy during training.

“They have also taken up the project for the sitting stands which they hoped to discuss with the leadership of the Sports Commission later as well as request for rugby equipment to assist the school training program,” the statement added.

They also revealed plans to have a regular school tournament beginning this year.

“It is a thing of joy to have Eyoto Group accepting to sponsor the Rugby Schools Tournament starting this year alongside its normal Eyoto Athletics Championship. We look forward to more well-meaning corporate bodies and individuals coming to our rescue by sponsoring our activities.”

The new board also expressed delight about the progress of the Edo State rugby teams with a vow to build on their achievement.

During their inauguration on Wednesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, urged the chairmen of sports associations to scout for sponsors to support their various associations.
