A former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised the proposal for the creation of additional 31 states in Nigeria.


Senator Sani questioned the need for new states, given that most existing ones rely on federal allocations to survive.

He shared this view on his official X handle on Friday.


“It is both ironic and comical that, despite many states relying on federal funds to survive, the House of Representatives is considering a proposal for 31 new states,” he wrote.

However, the House of Representatives has clarified that it is not actively proposing the creation of 31 states but has merely received 31 submissions requesting state creation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr. explained that these proposals were submitted as private member bills and do not reflect the official position of the House.


The clarification came after a plenary session where the Deputy Speaker, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, announced the submissions and outlined the constitutional hurdles they must clear.

Daily Post gathered that if any of these proposals are approved, the number of states in Nigeria could increase to 67.
