Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis has announced his resignation amid mounting pressure for him to step down ahead of a re-run of the country’s presidential election, which was controversially annulled last year.

The December vote was voided by Romania’s top court following allegations of Russian state interference.

Iohannis, a pro-EU liberal, had initially planned to remain in office until a new president was elected in May.


However, he faced strong criticism from far-right politicians and their supporters, who had gained significant traction in the first round of voting before the election was canceled.

Public outrage over the annulment led to mass protests, with tens of thousands of Romanians taking to the streets last month.

Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers renewed efforts in parliament on Monday to push for Iohannis’ suspension.

In response, the President announced his decision to step down, citing concerns that a prolonged political battle would be detrimental to the country.

“In order to spare Romania and the Romanian citizens from crisis, I resign from the office of president of Romania,” Iohannis declared, confirming that he would officially vacate the position on Wednesday.
