Inter Miami captain, Lionel Messi could break Cristiano Ronaldo and the late Pele’s record of most FIFA Club World Cup goals when the competition starts this weekend.

The Argentina forward has scored five goals in the tournament in the past.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is two goals behind the leading pair, Pele and Ronaldo, who will not take part in the competition this year.

Messi will play for Inter Miami, who is among one of the 32 teams participating in the FIFA Club World Cup’s revamped format.

Inter Miami are in Group A of the Club World Cup and will face the likes of Al Ahly, Palmeiras and FC Porto.

The Herons will open their campaign against Al Ahly on Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Messi, however, will hope to lead Inter Miami to victory against the Egyptian club.
