Lyon have been relegated from Ligue 1 due to their substantial debts, which exceed €500 million.

The former French champions appeared before the National Management Control Directorate, DNCG, alongside several other top-flight clubs.

All were questioned regarding their financial health.


It was subsequently decided that Lyon would be relegated to Ligue 2.

Last year, Lyon reported debts of approximately €500 million (£418 million).

However, Eagle Football Group, the consortium that owns the French side, activated several financial levers in an attempt to convince the DNCG that the club’s financial situation had significantly improved. These included the sale of John Textor’s stake in Crystal Palace and the sale of Lyon’s women’s team. Nonetheless, none of these measures met the DNCG’s requirements.

Lyon may now appeal the DNCG’s decision. However, if the sanction is upheld, they will be compelled to play in the second division for the 2025–26 campaign.
