Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked a police patrol vehicle in Zaria, Kaduna State, killing one officer and injuring three others.

The patrol vehicle was reportedly trailing a Golf car when gunshots were heard in Dalan Waje area along the Galadimawa road, Zaria Local Government Area around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.

A resident who witnessed the incident told Aminiya that upon hearing the gunshots, people started running away from the area in panic and even laid on the ground to avoid the gunshots.

The incident shocked the residents of the area because even though it is a well-known hotspot for bandits, the area had not witnessed an incident like that for a while now.

One police officer, Nasiru Musa, a resident of Kofar Kibo in Zaria city, was confirmed dead.

The injured included the police driver, Auwalu Hassan (from Jos), a volunteer member of the security team by name Awwal Hassan, and other policemen identified as Iliyasu Ya’u and Salisu Mohammed.

They were rushed to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika for treatment.

When contacted, the Kaduna State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansur Hassan said he was attending a meeting.
