North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, chief, Mark Rutte has denied promising Ukraine membership as part of a peace deal with Russia.

According to Reuters, Rutte made this known to reporters on Thursday, noting the importance of ensuring Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, does not attack Ukraine again.

“We have to make sure that Vladimir Putin never ever tries again to attack Ukraine; that is crucial… but it has never been a promise to Ukraine that as part of a peace deal they would be part of NATO,” Rutte said.

United States of America, President, Donald Trump is in talks with Russia to end the over two-year-old war in Ukraine.

Trump and Pete Hegseth, US Secretary of Defence, in different statements, hinted that Ukraine’s membership of NATO is ‘unrealistic,’ suggesting the need to explore peace with Russia.

In reaction, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, welcomed the peace move but noted that the country will not honour negotiations without Kyiv’s involvement.
