Residents of Tanwalbougou in the eastern part of Burkina Faso are currently fleeing their homes following the occupation of their village by suspected terrorist groups.

The residents are now seeking refuge in the nearby city of Fada N’Gourma, local sources said.

This was disclosed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, in a post on his X handle.

Makama stated that the mass displacement highlights the growing security crisis in the country.

The security expert noted that armed groups have continued to overrun communities despite efforts by the ruling authorities to combat insurgency.

Makama stated that witnesses reported that heavily armed militants stormed Tanwalbougou, forcing families to abandon their homes and livestock in search of safety.

“The situation is dire. People are fleeing with only what they can carry, and many have no place to stay in Fada,” said a local resident who arrived in the city with his family.

Makama further stated that the attack adds to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso, where large parts of the country remain under the control of non-state armed groups.
