Former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, could be facing up to 28 years in prison after he was charged with allegedly helping to mastermind a far-right conspiracy to cling to power through a military coup on Tuesday night.

Brazil’s attorney general, Paulo Gonet, brought the charges against the former President alongside several key allies.

Experts say the former Brazilian leader could face up to 28 years in jail if convicted. harges against him included being involved in an attempted coup d’état and an armed criminal association and the violent abolition of the rule of law.

However, Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied breaking his country’s laws.

Bolsonaro was Brazil’s number one citizen from 2019 until 2022.

In a 884-page federal police report, Bolsonaro is accused of playing a lead role in planning and organising a conspiracy designed to stop the leftwing victor of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, taking power.
