The Lagos State Government has stated plans to launch a N500m Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme to empower farmers with a 25 per cent subsidy on animal feeds (poultry and fish) to boost local agricultural production in the state.

The state’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Ounje Eko Discount Market was introduced to cushion the effect of food inflation for Lagos residents.

The commissioner said the subsidy programme scheduled to start on February 5, 2025, would disburse feeds at the discounted price of 25 per cent every Wednesday as a pilot run for the programme.

Pre-ordering and payment processes will be managed through farmers’ associations to ensure transparency.

“Vendors will deliver pre-ordered products to market locations for verification and distribution,” the commissioner said.
