Clashes between two factions of Boko Haram, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad (JAS) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have escalated in the Lake Chad region, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.
According to intelligence sources available to Zagazola Makama, the renewed conflict is fueled by ideological and territorial disagreements. ISWAP continues to push for stricter governance under Islamic law, while JAS adheres to a more localized insurgency approach. In an attempt to mediate the dispute, Bakura Doro, also known as Abu Ummaima, reportedly reached out to the ISWAP Shura Council to propose negotiations. However, the attempt collapsed, leading to increased violence.

The conflict is not limited to the Lake Chad Basin; it has spread into Nigeria’s North West and North Central regions, where the two extremist groups are competing for control over smuggling routes, recruitment bases, and local support. The rivalry has even led to clashes with local bandit factions, further complicating the security situation.
