Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone, has claimed that Real Madrid’s failure to score a third goal in their 2-1 win over them in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday “left the door open”.

Rodrygo put Real ahead as early as the 4th minute at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Julián Álvarez equalized for the visitors and Brahim Díaz put Los Blancos back in front.

However, Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior failed to combine and score a late third for Real.

They will now take the slim advantage ahead of the second leg at the Metropolitano on March 12.

“We ended up competing well.

“There was just that risk at the end, when they won the ball, with Mbappé and Vinícius to finish it off. The hope, that it wasn’t a goal, leaves the door open for what comes next,” Simeone told the media afterwards.

Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, added: “If it was difficult today, imagine how difficult it will be on Wednesday.

“But we have a small advantage. It will be difficult [at the Metropolitano]. Not much will change.”
