Pakistani police on Tuesday reported that a suicide bombing tore through a security installation in north-western Pakistan, killing at least nine civilians.

The head of the police force in the northern district of Bannu, Zia u Din, said the explosion also injured 18 people, adding that these figures did not include any casualties among security forces.

According to police officials, the blast was likely caused by a vehicle laden with explosives.

Speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, a military official stated that militants had rammed two explosive-filled vehicles into the walls of the facility but were thwarted by security forces.

He added that six militants were killed in an exchange of fire following the blast.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.

However, attacks by the Pakistani Taliban Islamist militant group have reportedly increased in recent years, targeting police and military forces in areas near the Afghan border.

The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the border province where the explosion took place, Ali Amin Gandapur, condemned the incident and stated that he had requested a report from senior police officials on the attack.
