There was a moment of confusion and controversy, as Julian Alvarez’s penalty for Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid was chalked off during the shoot-out on Wednesday.

Atletico, who lost the first leg 2-1 at the Bernabeu, had levelled the tie thanks to Conor Gallagher’s early goal.

With no further goals in 120 minutes, the Champions League last-16 tie had to be decided from 12 yards.

The key moment in that penalty shootout came with the fourth kick, taken by Alvarez.

With it 2-1 in Real’s favour, Alvarez slipped as he took his effort.

Initially it looked like he had got away with it after the ball flew into the roof of the net.

But the VAR official checked the replay, which showed Alvarez connected with the ball with his standing leg and then the other leg for a double kick.

That is against the rules with penalties so the ‘goal’ was ruled out.

So, instead of it being 2-2, it went back to 2-1 to Real, with Fede Valverde making it 3-1.

Angel Correa scored for Atletico for 3-2 to Real, then both Lucas Vazquez and Marcos Llorente missed for Real and Atletico respectively.

That gave Antonio Rudiger the chance to win the shootout for Real, which he did as they sealed a 4-2 victory on penalties to set up a quarter-final with Arsenal.
