National Council of Women Socities, NCWS, has said that the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate for six months has further depleted and marginalized the women in Nigeria.

President of NCWS in Cross River State, Chief Majorie Asuquo, who briefed journalists in Calabar on Thursday on weeklong activities to mark this year’s women celebration, declined further comments on the Natasha issue as it is now before the court.

However, she lamented, “The suspension of Senator Natasha has further depleted the numerical strength of women who were four in the Senate of 109 members. Now women are three following the suspension.


“This is indicates further marginalization of women which we have been lamenting over.”

Also speaking, pioneer president NCWS in the state, Rev Grace Ekanem said there is wide disparity in the distribution of political appointments in the country.

Ekanem emphasized the importance of girl-child education, advising against denying them opportunities.

“Parents should emphasize education of their children first before talking about marriages. With good education, the women can help out the husbands, build homes and society.”
