SDP youths reject El-Rufai’s defection over anti-democratic history

A coalition of youths within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has rejected the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of having a history of anti-democratic tendencies and a disregard for inclusivity.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the group’s leader, Comrade Abdulsamad Bello.

He described El-Rufai as unfit and morally unqualified to be in the party.

He warned that El-Rufai’s presence could destabilize the SDP, alleging that his tenure as governor was marked by authoritarianism, suppression of opposition voices, and impunity.

The coalition also criticized the party’s leadership for allowing what it called a “clandestine deal” that facilitated El-Rufai’s entry.

The group further pointed to demonstrations by El-Rufai’s supporters at the SDP national headquarters in Abuja, where they called for the resignation of the party’s national secretary, Olu Agunloye, as evidence of his attempt to take control of the party.

The youth group accused El-Rufai of using the SDP as a platform for his political ambitions after his fallout with the APC and President Bola Tinubu.

They dismissed his defection as a calculated move to remain relevant, calling his criticisms of opposition leaders in the past hypocritical.

Recall that El-Rufai recently left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after criticizing the party and engaging with opposition figures.
