The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the water challenges facing hydrocarbon impacted communities in Ogoniland, Rivers State.

HYPREP, however, disclosed that about 30 communities in Ogoniland can now boast of potable drinking water courtesy of HYPREP.

HYPREP’s Project Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey, stated this in a statement released on Saturday to mark this year’s World Water Day with the theme, “Glacier Preservation.”

Zabbey said the theme of this year’s celebration “highlights the importance of protecting potable water sources, such as the operational water schemes and those under construction in Ogoniland.”

The statement read, “The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) joins the global community to mark World Water Day today with the theme “Glacier Preservation.”

” This year’s theme underscores the need to protect the world’s freshwater sources, which sustain ecosystems, support human life, and regulate our climate.

“It specifically highlights the importance of preserving glaciers, a critical source of freshwater for millions of people worldwide.”

He continued “At HYPREP, we recognize the importance of clean and safe water, particularly for the hydrocarbon-impacted communities of Ogoniland.

“The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report on Ogoniland made clear recommendations for restoring contaminated water sources, and HYPREP has remained steadfast in implementing these recommendations.

“HYPREP’s effort to provide potable water is a critical component of its mandate to remediate and restore the environment in Ogoniland.
