The Kebbi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service is ramping up efforts in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and anti-smuggling operations.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Chidi Chukwumeziri Nwokorie, reiterated his commitment to enforcing Customs regulations, while promoting legitimate trade.

Arewa PUNCH reports that within just six weeks into his tenure, Comptroller Nwokorie had reported that despite border closures and economic challenges, the Command generated N13,378,002 in revenue and carried out successful anti-smuggling operations.

The Command also recorded seizures worth N84.2 million, including 145 bales of second-hand clothing, 13,750 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and 114 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each).

Other intercepted goods included 70 expired cartons of Biggy Vanilla Wafer Biscuit and 40 bags of foreign sugar (50kg each), among other contraband.

Nwokorie, who also highlighted the importance of collaboration with sister agencies such as the NDLEA, NAFDAC, Police, DSS, NIS, NSA, and the Nigerian Army in securing the borders, vowed to sustain the crackdown on smuggling while ensuring that legitimate businesses flourish.

To strengthen the cooperation, he disclosed that he has engaged border communities, traders, and sister agencies to improve intelligence sharing, even as he urged stakeholders to leverage trade facilitation initiatives introduced by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, while also assuring the residents of continued support within legal frameworks.

Similarly, he pledged to enhance border security, boost revenue, and uphold national security, stressing, “This is my mission and my bond. I will not fail the NCS, and I will not fail the nation.”
