The PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, got a warm welcome on Wednesday. Thousands of Yewa indigenes in Ogun West senatorial district came out to support his governorship bid.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the crowd included many PDP supporters from Yewa. They openly declared their choice for the PDP candidate.
At the event held at the Tetede Hall in Ilaro, Chief Akinbami Lukman, a leader of the Believe Movement from Imeko Afon Local Government, spoke on behalf of the group. He said they chose to back Adebutu's ambition for the sake of Ogun people and the Ogun agenda.
Akinbami assured Adebutu and the PDP members present that the group would work hard for his success. He promised that every vote would count during the election.
Another leader, Mr Jimoh Azeez from a youth group called the Door to Door Foot-Soldiers, also pledged their support for Adebutu. He said Nigerian youths are now more aware and will make their voices heard with their votes in 2027.
Azeez stated, "We won’t say they will write the results. We will mobilise, vote and stand by our votes. Our ruling class should know that it is a new dawn."
He added, "They can continue to go around leaders and traditional rulers. We are the ones on the field. They will be shocked. We will protect Yewa’s turn for a true son of the soil with no controversy."
Others who spoke highlighted the good works of the Adebutu family for the poor, even without holding public office. They believe that if he becomes governor, he will ensure that the state's resources benefit the people.
The Awori indigenes also took their turn to endorse Adebutu’s candidacy. They made it clear they were not tied to any political party or district leaders.
They stated they were backing someone who would uphold the dignity of the state, saying, "the PDP governorship candidate is that person."
In response, Adebutu thanked all his supporters. He said he felt humbled by the love shown by the true indigenes of Yewa land.
Adebutu noted that if Gboyega Isiaka, Abiodun Akinlade, or any other candidate from different parties had run against him, it would have been difficult. He added that he had supported all true Yewa sons who were candidates of the PDP and Allied People’s Movement.
He promised the indigenes that he is committed to the growth and development of the senatorial district. "I am very happy with the determination that I am seeing here. These are the people, and democracy is for the people. Talk with your votes. We only have one state, and we must protect our heritage," Adebutu added.
His team also stopped at the palace, where he was welcomed by the traditional council.
