The Chairman of the United States chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Tai Balofin, has urged Nigerians living abroad to start mobilising their families and friends back home for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections.
Balofin made this call on Friday at the launch of the “Call Home for Continuity” campaign during the first Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference and inauguration ceremony by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Diaspora, North America in Houston, Texas. He released a statement he signed on Friday.
The campaign aims to encourage Nigerians in the diaspora to persuade their relatives in Nigeria to register to vote, get their Permanent Voter Cards, and support the APC and Tinubu’s second-term effort.
While speaking at the event, Balofin said Nigerians abroad have a role to play in shaping the political future of Nigeria, even while living outside the country.
“Our responsibility does not end because we live outside Nigeria. We must engage our families and communities back home, encourage them to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, participate in the electoral process and support the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he stated.
Balofin, who is also the chapter Chairman of the APC in the US, described the Nigerian diaspora as a powerful group that can influence election results through family connections, advocacy, and lawful political action.
He explained that the “Call Home for Continuity” initiative would help coordinate diaspora support for Tinubu’s administration and its reforms as the 2027 elections approach.
At the event, he gave inauguration letters and awards to the newly appointed coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Diaspora, North America, calling them grassroots mobilisers who will lead the campaign in North America.
He asked them to use their influence, resources, and networks to keep supporting the APC and encourage political engagement among Nigerians living abroad.
Ambassador Semiu Ayoola Olanipekun, the General Coordinator of RHADNA, also spoke. He said Nigerians in the diaspora cannot sit back and watch Nigeria’s democracy unfold.
“The era of passive participation by Nigerians in the diaspora is over. Our economic strength, professional skills, and family ties should be used to boost political participation and strengthen democracy back home,” Olanipekun noted.
According to the organisers, the campaign will tap into the strong family and community ties that Nigerians abroad maintain across all 36 states to promote voter registration, Permanent Voter Card collection, and support for Tinubu’s re-election.
This launch comes as election activities for the 2027 general elections pick up speed, with support groups in Nigeria and abroad working harder to mobilise for the ruling party.
Even though Nigerians in the diaspora do not have voting rights in national elections, past governments have continued to engage with the community due to its economic impact and political power. Nigeria is one of the biggest recipients of remittances in Africa, with billions of dollars sent back home every year.
The drive to mobilise also follows a recent ruling by a Federal High Court that the APC should not have official party chapters outside Nigeria. Still, diaspora APC leaders insist that Nigerians abroad have the right to associate and participate politically. They maintain that their activities focus on mobilising support for the party and not on conducting official electoral processes abroad.
