The police in Delta State have arrested a well-known content creator from Asaba, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also called "Odogwu of Asaba." He is accused of raping a 20-year-old woman who later took her own life after recording a heartbreaking video blaming him for the assault.
The police made the arrest after a petition claimed the woman traveled from Warri to Asaba after he invited her, saying he wanted to help and mentor her in content creation.
In a statement on Wednesday, the police spokesman in Delta, Bright Edafe, said the woman died after taking a toxic substance, despite attempts to save her. The police confirmed that investigations are still ongoing.
Heartbreaking Last Words
In a tearful video shared with the press by Mr Edafe, the emotional woman, who only identified herself as Favour from Warri, started with a chilling message.
"Everyone here. My name is Favour from Warri. This will be the last video of me in the whole world youâll be seeing. By the time you see this video, I will already be dead, and the cause of my death is Odogwu Asaba."
She described the suspect as a popular content creator who lived in a hotel where he also ran a boutique. She explained how they met online when she reached out to him for financial help due to some personal issues.
"This video is dedicated to him. As of Friday, two weeks ago, today is 14 July, was when the incident happened. I met him online and told him I had some challenges and needed money to solve them."
Favour said she sought his advice after another man wanted to have sex with her before helping her with money.
"I told him I know of a man from Asaba but based in Abuja, and that the man wanted to have intercourse with me, but I couldnât go⊠I needed someone to talk to because I donât have any friends."
She said that the content creator discouraged her from going to Abuja and instead asked her to meet him in Asaba.
"He asked me to meet him in Asaba on Friday, that he was going to help me. He did not tell me that he was going to sleep with me before helping me."
Trip to Asaba
Favour said she traveled to Asaba without telling her parents. Only her twin sister knew about her trip, and she gave her the suspectâs phone number and name.
She mentioned that she no longer had screenshots of her chats with the suspect because she turned on WhatsAppâs 24-hour disappearing messages.
"He did not engage in any conversations with me on sex that I would now say, okay, Iâm going there."
She said the suspect sent her money for transport and later took her from his shop to a car wash before heading to the hotel.
"I didnât have it in mind that he would demand sex because he is a popular person and would not try rubbish because people would drag him online. That is where my mistakes came from."
According to her, the suspect later expressed his wish to have sex with her.
"We went inside, and he started saying stuff that he likes me and would like to have sex with me."
Police Action
The police reported that Favour traveled to Asaba on 1 June after the suspect supposedly offered to train her in content creation through a program he promoted on social media.
The police alleged that once she arrived, the suspect took her to a hotel where he raped and assaulted her before she returned home and told her parents about the incident.
The command stated that she recorded the video detailing her ordeal before ending her life by taking a toxic substance. After a petition, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered a quick investigation, which led to the suspectâs arrest.
According to the police, the suspect "made useful statements" during the initial questioning, while investigators keep working to clarify all the details of the case.
A Terrible Mistake
Another video shared by the police seems to show the handcuffed suspect talking to two people believed to be the deceasedâs parents in what looks like a police station.
In the clip, he slammed a table with his handcuffed hands and said, "This is a very terrible mistake." The police commissioner assured the deceasedâs family and the public that the allegations would be fully investigated and that no part of the case would be ignored.
