A 30-year-old woman, Chisom Chukwukere, has been arrested for allegedly beating a 10-year-old boy in Awada, Obosi, located in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Her husband, Chukwudi, was also taken into custody. They are accused of using burning plastic to cause severe burns on the child.

A video showing the boy with serious injuries went viral recently, causing public outrage. People expressed their anger online after seeing the boy's condition.

Operatives from the Anambra State Police Command arrested the couple. At the same time, the woman’s infant child was taken into protective custody by the state Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare on Thursday.

While being questioned, Chisom reportedly begged police and officials to let her have her infant back. She claimed the child was sick and could not be left alone.

A video shared online showed her appealing to the authorities to return the child because of the infant's health needs.

This situation has led to more public anger. Many people are asking how someone who claims to care for her own child could also harm another child so badly.

The infant has since been placed in the care of a family member through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed what happened. He said investigations are ongoing and promised that anyone found guilty will face justice.

He stated, "The police remain committed to enforcing laws meant to protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and all forms of violence.

"The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, assures residents that the command will work with government agencies, child protection organizations, and community members to promote and protect children's rights, safety, and welfare across the state.

"The Anambra State Police Command is dedicated to promoting justice, compassion, and human rights in line with the Inspector-General of Police's vision."
