Panic hit residents of Mushin, Onipanu, Fadeyi, Jibowu and Ojuelegba in Lagos State on Tuesday evening. Businesses closed early and streets became empty after the reported killing of Toba Ajiboye. He was the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Lagos State and was known as Ijaya.

Metro Punch reported that Ijaya died at an undisclosed hospital. Doctors were trying to save him after he was attacked by gunmen on Sunday night. He was returning home from his childhood area in Fadeyi when the incident happened.

The attackers stopped his car on the Ikorodu Road and opened fire, leaving the vehicle with many bullet holes. His death has raised fears of possible revenge attacks by his supporters in the affected areas. In response, the Lagos State Police Command has sent patrol vans to key spots in the community.

Our correspondent saw at least six police patrol vans around Ojuelegba, Jibowu and Fadeyi. Meanwhile, businesses on Kayode Street, near the Onipanu bus stop in Mushin, began closing by around 8:20 p.m. The Conoil filling station close to the bus stop also shut down.

Commuters found themselves stranded at the Ojuelegba bus stop. Not many commercial buses were operating along that route. Several bus drivers avoided the Mushin area because they feared trouble might break out.

A shop owner named Ronke confirmed what was happening. She said, "I was in my shop when one man came to tell me to close early. He said they’ve killed an NURTW official, Tobi Ijaya, and because of that, area boys can take the law into their hands and cause trouble. I started closing around past 7."

Ronke added, "I also noticed that people closed early, including those who usually sell till around past 11. Everyone started closing around past 7. However, immediately after I heard the information, I saw police vans parading."
