Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, is sticking to his plan of compensating residents whose properties are impacted by government projects. Another round of payments has been made to communities affected by ongoing road construction.
On Friday, during a cheque presentation event in Basawa, Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Governor Sani said his government cares about the welfare and dignity of its citizens.
The governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, AbdulKadir Muâazu Meyere. He gave out compensation cheques to residents whose properties are in the way of the Hunkuyi, Unguwan Rimi, Basawa Road project. This road connects Kudan and Sabon Gari local government areas.
This new compensation comes just two weeks after the state government paid over N2 billion to about 1,000 residents affected by the Rigasa, Tudun Wada flood and gully erosion control project. On that same day, payments were also made to families affected by the construction of the 15-kilometre Ring Road from Danbushiya Junction to Danhonou 2 in Millennium City.
Governor Sani said his government is determined to provide infrastructure that improves lives while treating those affected fairly.
âOur philosophy is that development must be people-centred, inclusive and guided by justice, compassion and fairness,â he stated.
He pointed out that the Hunkuyi, Unguwan Rimi, Basawa Road is an important project. It will improve connections between Kudan and Sabon Gari, make it easier to move farm products, boost business, enhance access to social services and stimulate economic growth.
He recognized that some homes and businesses are in the approved right-of-way. But he stressed that public development should not harm citizens.
âFor this administration, development should never come at the expense of justice. No citizen should bear an unfair burden in the pursuit of public infrastructure,â he said.
Governor Sani explained that the government did a fair assessment of all affected properties. This was to make sure that every eligible resident got fair and adequate compensation before the work starts.
He praised community leaders, stakeholders, and officials from the Kaduna State Roads Agency (KADRA) for conducting the assessment with professionalism.
âThe compensation being distributed today is not an act of charity; it is the fulfillment of the governmentâs legal and moral duty to citizens whose properties are affected by this important project,â he added.
The governor noted that these payments follow his governmentâs policy of compensating affected residents quickly before major infrastructure projects begin.
âAcross Kaduna State, this administration has paid compensation to thousands of affected residents on several strategic road projects, with billions of naira disbursed. This shows our commitment to balancing infrastructure development with protecting citizensâ rights and livelihoods,â he said.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the Kaduna State Roads Agency (KADRA), Dr Abdullahi Baba Ahmad, said this exercise shows Governor Saniâs commitment to building transformative infrastructure while looking out for citizens' interests.
He said the compensation process shows the governmentâs promise to ensure that all affected people receive their rightful payments according to due process and best practices before construction begins.
