The International Human Rights Network has asked for international oversight and a fair investigation into the death of Mary Habila.

This was in a statement shared with journalists by the organisation’s spokesman, Abubakar Zaria, on Friday in Abuja.

In an earlier petition, the group urged the US Embassy in Nigeria to investigate Ms Habila’s death.

Ms Habila, who was reportedly a nurse, was found dead at a private home belonging to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Mr Zaria mentioned that there are still many questions about how Ms Habila died and called for a complete investigation. This should include forensic tests, witness interviews, and other legal investigative steps.

He acknowledged that Mr Umahi had made public statements offering condolences to the family and supporting an autopsy.

But he said there are still worries about how the case is being handled and called for a probe that is free from any political influence.

Mr Zaria also asked for confirmation of Ms Habila’s job status and if she had any official reason to be at the minister’s residence.

He expressed concern about moving the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department in Ebonyi. He argued that independent oversight would help the public trust the findings.

He also mentioned past allegations against Mr Umahi, stating that these claims should be investigated properly and based on solid evidence.

He called for an independent investigative panel with international observers, thorough forensic checks, including autopsy and toxicology reports, and protection for witnesses and whistleblowers. Anyone found guilty should be prosecuted based on enough evidence.

Mr Zaria urged foreign diplomatic missions to push the federal government and relevant law enforcement in Nigeria to ensure the investigation is open and follows the law.

He said copies of the petition have been sent to the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Other recipients include the National Human Rights Commission, the African Union Commission, ECOWAS, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and other international groups.
