In a big move to improve farming, help local communities, and support girls' education, the Jigawa State Executive Council has approved contracts and fund releases worth over ₦2.4 billion.

A statement from the state government’s spokesperson, Sagir Musa, said these decisions were made during the Council’s meeting on 22 June, led by Governor Umar Namadi.

The approvals include a plan for commercial greenhouses, large compensation payments for urban renewal projects, and a student welfare program across the state.

₦273.29 million for Greenhouses

To shift from small-scale farming to high-tech commercial agriculture, the Council approved ₦273,293,272.50 for building 20 type-II greenhouses. These greenhouses will be set up in 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) such as Birnin Kudu, Gumel, Kafin Hausa, Kiyawa, Kasamma, Jahun, Malam Madori, Taura, and Sule Tankarkar.

These facilities will act as year-round centers for controlled farming and high-value crop production.

This initiative will also boost the training of 82 young people who just finished a program on modern soilless farming techniques at the Soilless Farm Lab in Abeokuta.

Over ₦1 billion approved for road and market compensation

Showing its commitment to helping people, Mr Musa said the Namadi administration cleared compensation packages over ₦1 billion. This money will support citizens whose homes and businesses are affected by current modernization projects.

“The Council reaffirms its promise to improve public infrastructure while protecting the livelihoods and financial interests of local communities,” the official said.

Student welfare and education

To lessen the financial burden on families and improve literacy rates, the Council approved a total of ₦624,615,344.15 for two important areas: educational support and better management, Mr Musa added.

One major point of this approval is buying and distributing 23,800 sets of uniforms for female students in public schools across the state. This welfare initiative aims to increase school enrollment, encourage girls to stay in school, and support struggling families, the official noted.
