The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo has destroyed 4,628.9kg of suspected cannabis from two farms. They also arrested 10 people in different operations.

The state Commander of NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, shared this news in a statement on Monday in Benin.

Mr Ofoyeju said the operations took place at Ugboku in Igbanke Forest, which is in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, and in Oluku and Abuja Quarters in Benin City.

He mentioned that these operations are part of the agency's efforts to clear the state of illegal drug activities.

He added that the actions follow the orders of Buba Marwa, a retired brigadier-general and the chairman of NDLEA, to eliminate illegal drug spots across the country.

“In a renewed offensive tasking order, the command discovered and successfully destroyed two suspected cannabis farms covering 1.851591 hectares. The estimated yield was 4,628.9775kg,” Mr Ofoyeju explained.

“One suspect, a 40-year-old man, was arrested linked to the first farm, which covered 0.699792 hectares and had an estimated yield of 1,749.26kg of cannabis.

“The second farm was larger, measuring 1.151889 hectares, with an estimated yield of 2,879.7225kg, and it was also destroyed.

“From the second farm, we also seized two bags of processed substance believed to be cannabis sativa weighing 12.4kg,” he said.

The commander noted that they also conducted a targeted raid at Oluku and Abuja Quarters in the state capital.

He stated that this operation aimed to dismantle drug hotspots and led to the arrest of 10 suspected male drug dealers with different amounts of illegal drugs.

At Oluku, Mr Ofoyeju reported that a 28-year-old suspect from Aniocha South Local Government Area in Delta State was caught with 25.857kg of suspected cannabis and 93g of methamphetamine.

He added that this suspect was arrested on 14 August. “Nine other suspects were picked up at Abuja Quarters on 13 August.”

He revealed that these suspects came from Nasarawa, Katsina, Kano, and Benue states. They were found with various illegal drugs including Loud, cannabis sativa, Swinol, and Danabol. Others had Tramadol, Diazepam, and methamphetamine.

Mr Ofoyeju confirmed that all suspects are now in custody while investigations are ongoing to prepare for their prosecution.
