The federal government has announced that six Nigerians held in Côte d'Ivoire since October 2025 have been released. This comes after months of talks between Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire over alleged economic crimes.
In a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government revealed that four of the detainees were freed on June 22. The last two were released the following day, thanks to the hard work of the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan.
The names of the Nigerians and the specific economic crimes they were accused of were not shared.
The ministry said this release is a result of ongoing diplomatic efforts between the embassy and the relevant Ivorian authorities.
The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, highlighted that the Nigerian mission had regular access to the detainees. They monitored their welfare and worked with Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, and other bodies to help bring about their release.
The ministry praised Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Nwabiola Ezenwa, and the embassy staff for their professionalism and dedication in handling the situation.
It also thanked the government of Côte d’Ivoire for their cooperation with Nigeria. The ministry pointed out that the friendly relationship between the two West African countries was key in getting the detainees released.
“The successful release of the six Nigerians shows the effectiveness of our continuous diplomatic efforts and highlights the government’s dedication to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad,” the ministry said.
It confirmed that protecting Nigerians overseas is a top priority for the country’s foreign policy. The ministry added that diplomatic missions will keep providing support and engage with other governments when needed.
Lastly, the ministry advised Nigerians living or traveling abroad to follow the laws of the host countries. They should also keep in touch with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate to receive quick help when necessary.
