SROL Promotes Responsible Mining at Nigeria Mining Week 2026

Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), part of Thor Explorations Ltd and operator of Nigeria’s first commercial gold mine, confirmed its commitment to responsible mining at Nigeria Mining Week (NMW) 2026. The company was a Diamond Sponsor at the event.

Nigeria Mining Week took place from October 12 to 14 at the Abuja Continental Hotel. This was the 11th edition of NMW, bringing together government officials, investors, mining companies, and experts. They explored this year’s theme of “unlocking investment and growth through partnerships” and building skills across the mining value chain. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development hosted the event, while the Miners Association of Nigeria worked with PwC Nigeria to organize it.

In his keynote speech at the main conference, SROL’s Country Manager, Austin Menegbo, said the success of the Segilola Gold Mine proves that commercial gold mines can be built and run in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for patient capital, technical discipline, good regulation, and strong community partnerships to create a successful mining industry in Nigeria.

Menegbo stated, “The opportunity before Nigeria is significant. But potential, by itself, creates no jobs, earns no export revenue, builds no skills and transforms no communities. Potential becomes valuable only when institutions and industry work together to convert it into responsible production. Segilola has shown that this can be done. Our responsibility now is to make the path clearer for the projects that should follow, not by lowering the bar, but by making the rules coherent, the processes credible and the partnerships real. If we do that, Nigeria will not merely have a successful gold mine. It will have a stronger mining industry: one that attracts serious capital, rewards responsible operators, expands Nigerian participation and delivers enduring value to the nation.”

SROL’s top management and technical team took part in important panel discussions. Menegbo, Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, Community Development and Stakeholder Manager, Sikiru Haruna, Mines Manager, and David Mbrekpadiaha, Environment Lead, discussed topics like beneficiation and refining, responsible mining, and keeping social licenses to operate throughout the mine's life cycle.

During its masterclass titled “From Compliance to Stewardship, Water Management: The SROL Way”, SROL shared its methods for water management, recycling, and conservation. This session highlighted the need to include water stewardship in mining operations and to manage water resources responsibly during the mining process.

SROL also presented “Building a Commercial Gold Industry in Nigeria, Lessons from Segilola and the Path to Scale”. This session shared lessons from setting up Nigeria’s first large-scale commercial gold mining operation and looked into opportunities for the wider industry. Through its exhibition booth, SROL engaged stakeholders on environmental stewardship, workplace safety, and the development of host communities.

Nigeria’s mining sector has great potential for economic growth, job creation, and industrial development. To realize this potential, there must be investment, good regulation, local skills, and responsible environmental management.

SROL’s role at NMW 2026 shows its commitment to sharing operational knowledge, promoting responsible mining practices, and supporting the growth of a competitive mining industry. This will create lasting value for Nigeria and its communities.
