The Abia State Government and a group of local and foreign investors are working hard to build a solar manufacturing plant worth 145 million dollars in the state. This project falls under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The new facility will be set up in Umuelele, located in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area. It is a joint effort between the Abia State Government, MD Nwakamma Nigeria Ltd, and technical partners from China.

Governor Alex Otti confirmed the state’s dedication to this project when he met with the investors on Thursday in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government. He said his government is focused on creating a friendly environment for investors and will keep supporting businesses to succeed.

He was happy that the project has reached the final investment decision stage, calling it a significant step for the state’s industrial development goals. The governor mentioned that the state government has already provided land for the project and is ready to solve any other problems that may come up to ensure it gets done.

“We are pleased that you have reached the final investment decision involving about 145 million dollars.

“This is exactly what we stand for. We want businesses to grow, investments to come into the state, and our people to benefit from them.

“We value investors because, beyond the capital they bring, they create jobs, grow the economy, and improve the standard of living of our people.

“We will continue to support and protect every genuine investment in Abia,” Mr Otti stated.

The leader of the investor group, Oko Jaja, shared that they visited the governor to update him on the solar manufacturing plant's progress. Mr Jaja explained that the consortium, along with their Chinese partners, plans to invest about 145 million dollars in the project.

He also mentioned that the first part of the funding is expected around September 2026. Mr Jaja praised the Abia State Government for creating a positive environment that builds confidence among investors.

Dennis Nwakamma, the Chief Executive Officer of MD Nwakamma Nigeria Ltd, said this project will be a breakthrough for renewable energy manufacturing in the state. He noted that the visit by the Chinese partners to the project site is for technical assessments before construction begins.

Mr Nwakamma added that the factory will make solar panels and related products, offering jobs and technical training for young people. He also stated that the company has started training youths in solar installation, with selected trainees going to China for advanced training in solar manufacturing.

He believes this initiative will boost local technical skills and position Abia as a key hub for renewable energy in Nigeria.
