The Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, also called the OCHA Brigade, has started a strong action against illegal street trading and environmental problems. They carried out a big enforcement and cleanup effort in Ogidi, Afor Igwe Umunnachi, Oye Agu Abagana, Nkpor, and nearby areas.
On Monday, the agency knocked down many shanties and illegal structures that were blocking drainage channels. They also seized goods that were displayed in violation of the state’s environmental rules.
This operation aimed to clean up the affected areas. It also intended to discourage residents, traders, and developers from continuing the risky and unlawful practice of building or running businesses in restricted areas.
The exercise focused on traders who displayed goods on roads, walkways, and other unauthorized public spaces. It also targeted illegal structures that blocked the free flow of traffic and pedestrians.
While the operation was ongoing, the Managing Director of the OCHA Brigade, Celestine Anere, said, “The action is part of the agency’s responsibility to protect lives and public infrastructure. Illegal shanties erected on roadsides and public property are the target.”
He gave a strong warning to individuals and groups involved in illegal building, roadside trading, and taking over government land. He said these activities put public safety at risk, block traffic, harm the environment, and mess up the city's order.
Anere emphasized that the enforcement would continue in different parts of the state as part of the government’s plan to keep Anambra clean, safe, and orderly.
“Traders and business owners are therefore advised to conduct their businesses only in approved markets and designated trading areas.
“They are also urged to stop displaying goods on roads, drainages, and walkways or building illegal structures, as defaulters will continue to face enforcement actions according to the laws of Anambra State,” the agency said.
